A historic and true account of nineteen year old Minnie Coffey's move west from North Carolina with her family in 1911. The story chronicles over fifty years in the life of an early Okanogan County, Washington pioneer and her family. Through all the difficult times and hardships, the family always manages to find a way to survive and move on, with many interesting stories and anecdotes to share about growing up on a farm in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Minnie's personal tragedy is overcome by sheer fate and the thoughtfulness of a traveling salesman who introduces her to a man who changes her life forever. World War II is a difficult time for the country, but Minnie and her family over come this difficult era when everything is rationed and many sons are sent off to fight in Europe and in the Pacific. Minnie has a good life with a large extended family but has a longing desire to return home one more time. Her nostalgic return to her home state with her granddaughter makes her realize how fortunate she is and helps her to appreciate all that life has given her.

"Nasturtiums for Grandma Minnie" is a wonderful biography of an early Watauga County family, including some of my own family, who took a great risk in moving all the way across the country, when I'm sure traveling wasn't anything like it is today. Kathy has captured many inspiring moments in her family history that we and our children can look back on for many years to come. I thououghly enjoyed reading it( I bought it from Amaon.com on a pc kindle ) and couldn't stop reading until I finished it. My interest is from a personal standpoint as my Great Grandfather, Tilden Isenhour and wife, Callie were personal friends of Minnie's. It brought back many wonderful memories for me. Very well written. I would highly recommend reading it.Product details

Such a great legacy!! I too am a Coffey cousin!!! The author truly brought together a family heritage and the best part is that the family is now more than names and dates! Great job!
Unless you have a connection with the people and places in this book there is not much to draw the reader into the world of the characters. The account goes very matter of factly from one event to another giving an accurate historical record but adding very little character development. Being a North Carolinian, and having been to the historic Moses Cone house I really wanted to love this book. But in the end I only got through about one half of the book and had to quit because I was bored. if you enjoy historical facts and genealogies this book is for you.
New some of the characters, thats why I bought it.
Interesting to read with local ties. Bought the version. Then ordered paperback as a gift, Easy to read with lots of "everyday" history.
I'm the author's Great Aunt,& I thoroughly enjoyed the book.Kathy did a great job putting the family history together,& I appreciate the way she portrayed the life & times that my parents lived.Aside from the family aspect,I think anyone interested in those times will find an accurate portrayal of one of the many families who "headed west" looking for a better life.I'm glad Kathy took the time to get it right,& for getting the book out.And of course 5 stars,after all it's about family.Grace N.
